Why Do You Hike? – Arizona Hikers Guide Why Do You Hike? – Arizona Hikers Guide
by Cameron Jarman on April 21, 2015
For years I struggled to find people to go hiking with me. I have several outdoor-minded friends but whenever I asked these fools to go on an overnight backpacking trip or a long day hike with me their replies would always be the same thing. It sounded something like this, “Dude, why would I just go walk around in the desert?”. Then they would follow it up with something like this, “If I am going to go outside I want to have a purpose. I want to hunt something, fish something, or ride something.” Does that sound familiar? The question is a legitimate one and also one that deserves an answer; why would you want to walk around outside?
Why I Hike
For me, hiking is an escape of sorts. It is a time where I get to feel all alone, get a little dirty, and feel primitive again. Now don’t get me wrong, I love to hunt, fish, climb, and all the other outdoor stuff I can afford to do. But if I had my choice I would choose to walk. When I hike, and especially when I backpack, I do this funny little thing where I pretend that the world has ended and I am a character in the book “The Road” or something. I try to bring as little supplies with me as I can and I try to test my abilities. It’s funny to think about it sitting here at the computer but it’s true, I get a little rush and feel a sense of pride when I can live on less than most.
Me eating grubs I found burrowed in a dead log. Tasted just like roasted almonds!
The Inner Cameron
Hiking has also been a way for me to regroup and explore the inner Cameron. Have you ever just got into your car and taken off into the mountains? Isn’t it interesting what happens to the mind? Running off into the woods or desert quenches that thirst for spontaneity and silence. It gives me a chance to look at myself without distraction. It has a cleansing effect. I also grew up with a father who was a purist hiker. He demanded that we get rid of as much gear and fluff as possible and enjoy the outdoors for the love of it. Every time I go out now I see a little more of my dad come out in me.
It’s in my DNA
I have sensed and seen this surge of hikers/explorers in the last few years. The outdoor “scene” has really become quite popular which I like to see. It’s cool to see all sorts of people trying out their hiking legs and are getting out to see this great state.
How do you feel when you get out? Do you hike, bike, climb, backpack? What fuels the fire guys (and gals)?
