Pre-hike Checklist- Arizona Hikers Guide
Every trip takes some sort of preparation. This pre-hike checklist makes it easy for you to make sure your hikes are safe and enjoyable. Check yo-self before you wreck yo-self!
1. Check the weather
The weather can determine a hike or no hike day. Weather in Arizona can be unpredictable and can ruin an otherwise great hike. Weather checking includes maximum and minimum temperatures. Believe it or not, the desert can get pretty dang cold at night (below freezing) so make sure you know the temperature extremes and prepare for them. Also, check the weather for flash flood warnings, monsoons, thunderstorms, and other extreme conditions that might hinder your trip. I always use Weather Underground because they are really good about weather advisory warnings.
2. Check for permits
I will do my best to tell you in the trail description if a hike requires a permit of some sort. Some hiking trails begin in an Arizona State Park which requires a fee. Here is a map that shows every state park (Arizona State Parks). Also, check the BLM for backcountry backpacking permits.
3. Check local fire restrictions
Don’t have a fire when fires are not allowed. Not cool and not pleasant when you get a hefty fine. Here is a simple website to check the fire restrictions for your hiking destination.
4. Check your gear
Use my gear guide to help you determine what you need and how much of it!
5. Check yourself
Are you in good enough shape? Are you hydrated? Are you with a friend (or dog)? Make sure you are in good enough physical condition and that you tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.
