Gear Review: Mora Classic 2/0- Arizona Hikers Guide

I have owned several knives in my lifetime but for some reason have never purchased a Morakniv.  Well, this year I received one in my stocking for Christmas this year and I was so excited to get out and cut something!  Here is my review of the Morakniv Classic 2/0.

Summary of Product:

Morakniv is a Swedish company that has been making knives for over a century in Mora Sweden.  The Classic is one line of knives that has a red ochre birch handle and a carbon steel blade.  It is a fixed blade knife that comes in a plastic sheath with a belt clip.

Dimensions:

  • Blade thickness: .10 inches
  • Blade Length: 2.9 inches
  • Total Length: 6.5 inches
  • Weight: 1.8 oz.

Morakniv makes three different blade types;

  1. Stainless steel
  2. Carbon steel
  3. Laminated steel

The Classic 2/0 comes with a carbon steel blade.  There are some advantages and disadvantages to carbon steel vs. stainless steel.  Carbon steel is very easy to sharpen and holds an edge longer than stainless steel but is also more susceptible to corrosion and rusting.  Carbon steel needs to stay dry and clean.  The blade will achieve a dullish grey finish with use which will actually help resist corrosion.

Another important aspect of the Classic 2/0 is that is full tang.  Full tang means the steel runs all the way through the handle instead of stopping 3/4 or 1/2 way like some other knives do.  This is worth mentioning because a full tang knife improves durability and resistance from separating from the handle.

My Thoughts:

Pros:

  • Price: the Mora Classic 2/0 is like $17 which is a no brainer!
  • Carbon steel:  I prefer carbon steel to stainless steel and the Swedish made steel is incredibly well made
  • Full tang: Brilliant.
  • Wood handle:  It’s not that important for performance but I just prefer a traditional looking wooden handle over rubber, plastic, or metal.

Cons:

  • Sheath:  the sheath is cheap garbage plastic and is not worth keeping.  It doesn’t hold the knife in at all.  There are plenty of how-to You Tube videos that show how to make customized sheaths.
  • Handle:  Although it is made from birch wood it does not feel like wood at all.  It feels cheap but might just need some breaking in.

Conclusion

Solid.  This knife rocks.  In my opinion, you cannot find a comparable knife at the same price point.  At under $20, it is superior quality and Morakniv just knocks it out of the park with the Classic 2/0.  Although it is not a hiking or backpacking knife, it makes a perfect traditional utility or wood working knife.  The saying rings true, “Mora knives are like potato chips, you can’t have just one!”.  I have a feeling I will be purchasing and reviewing many more products from this century old company!
