The Best Marriage Therapy is Found on the Trail – Arizona Hikers Guide

Who knew the best marriage therapy for my relationship would be free! My husband and I work hard as high school teachers and coaches here in the Valley of the Sun so during the school year we put a great deal of time and energy into our students and athletes. However, whenever we get the chance our first instinct is to get out and go hiking together. It always seems to give us a chance to reconnect and talk about things other than grading and school work.

Hiking the Inner Basin Trail

This fall break we decided to beat the heat by making our way up to Flagstaff. We both agreed on the Inner Basin Trail as our hike of choice and we arrived early on a week day to avoid the crowds (my husband is a bit of a solitude snob!). Since the trail was dog friendly we decided to bring our rambunctious seven month old labradoodle along for the adventure. She was in heaven to say the least. She would run ahead of us to scout out any signs of trouble (squirrels) and then run back when they’d start squeaking at her.

The trail weaved through aspen and pine trees that provided shade for the entire hike and was picturesque in every sense of the word. We were even lucky enough to see the leaves starting to change and the incredible golden yellows and oranges that remind us that fall is here. After 1.7 miles of winding through aspen groves we made our way to the inner basin of the San Francisco Peaks. This once ancient volcano has since turned into a beautiful valley of amber grasses, tall pines, and sparkling aspens. It was truly a magical place.
It was one of those hikes that makes you feel calm and at peace. My husband and I were able to spend quality time together and relax under the cool shade of the aspens. We talked about the future as we laid under the cool shade of the aspens.

I cannot recommend this hike enough. Although very popular, the trail offers so much that you hardly realize that you are sharing the path with others. My only advice is to go on a week day, early, so that you can have some time alone to really enjoy the beauty and peacefulness there.
